How many people have thought of going to suicide before
On September 7, the Nippon Foundation released the preliminary results of its "Suicide Awareness Survey," showing that one in four people have seriously considered suicide and that an estimated 530,000 people nationwide have attempted suicide. By generation, young people were most at risk of suicide.
In 2015, 24,025 people died by suicide in Japan. Although the number of suicides in Japan is on the decline, suicide remains the number one cause of death among the younger generation (15-39 years old).
One out of four respondents (25.4%) said they have seriously thought about committing suicide. By age, 34.9% were in their 20s and 34.2% were in their 30s, with a higher percentage among younger respondents. By gender, the proportion was higher among females (28.4%) compared to males (22.6%).
Causes of suicidal thoughts included "family," "health," "economic life," and "work. 65.5% of those who said they "seriously considered suicide" had suicidal thoughts due to a combination of two or more causes. In addition, 21.7% of those who had lost someone close to them, such as a family member, relative, or friend, to suicide, or one in five.
