How often does suicide occur in the World ?
3. How often does suicide occur in the World ?
From all the countries we chose these four countries to have a close look. (From G7 countries we picked America and Germany )
United States of America
The United States of America is known as one of the G7 members. According to the Department of Health, Labour and Welfare The rate is 13.8%.Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. In 2021, 48,183 americans died by suicide. The rate of suicide is highest in middle-aged white men.In 2021, men died by suicide 3.90 times more than women. On average, there are 132 suicides per day. In 2021, firearms were the most common method of death by suicide, accounting for a little more than half (54.64%) of all suicide deaths. The next most common methods were suffocation (including hangings) at 25.80% and poisoning (including drug overdose) at 11.56%.
China
Based on the WHO data, Chinese suicide is unique in comparison with those in the rest of the world in at least two ways. First, Chinese women commit more suicides than do Chinese men, while the reverse is true for the rest of the world. Second, rural Chinese commit more suicides than urban Chinese do, while in most parts of the world, suicide rates are higher in cities than in the country. In addition, the Chinese suicide age pattern is generally a bimodal one, though the first peak of suicide rates is between 15–24, instead of around the age of 25–34 as found other societies, and this is particularly true among rural females. Therefore, suicide by rural young women in China is an urgent focus in suicide research.
Germany
The majority of murder, homicide and assisted suicide victims in Germany were adults aged 21 to under 60, as of data from 2022. The data include both attempted and completed criminal acts.Suicide mortality rate is the number of suicide deaths in a year per 100,000 population. Crude suicide rate (not age-adjusted). Germany suicide rate for 2019 was 12.30, a 4.65% decline from 2018.
South Korea
In 2021, the suicide rate in South Korea was particularly high among the elderly population over the age of 80, with 61.3 deaths per 100,000 population. While the overall suicide rate among people over 40 declined, the suicide rate among young people increased compared to the previous year. Suicide was the leading cause among people aged ten to 39 years.
South korea has the highest suicide rates in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Poverty is one driving factor for suicide among the elderly – almost half of the senior citizens in the country live with less than half the median disposable income. Many do not want to become a burden for their family financially and commit suicide as a result of not being able to suoport themselves. For the younger population, education pressure, cyberbullying, as well as social media trends have been linked to suicidal behavior.

These are interesting international comparisons. Please include a summary of the similarities and differences at the end and try to speculate about reasons for such differences as suicide being prevalent among the elderly in South Korea while in the US it is middle-aged white men who are in the largest risk group.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the easy availability of guns in the US means that shooting oneself to death is the most common method (with other half of the completed suicides involving firearms). That brings up the topic of available methods and how the incidence of suicide might be reduced by restricting some methods. In India, suicides using agricultural chemicals is common, so, restricting the availability of them has been considered, for example.
By the way, America has a _Department_ of Health, Labour and Welfare, not a "Ministry."
