What kind of policies do social media platform have now to protect us (slanders)?

Five rules for social networking operation that companies should set.


Privacy Laws/Rights of Privacy

This means that businesses must abide by the idea of responsibly managing information received through user interaction and information collection, and refrain from inappropriately releasing such information to other parties or using it for improper reasons. For instance, it should be illegal to share or sell information gathered through direct messages (DMs) or user comments to unaffiliated third parties. Additionally, it's critical to gain the required consent and to be transparent about the intentions behind any personal data collection from followers. These precautions are critical not only to avoid legal infractions but also to win over people' trust.


Confidential Matters

Corporate activities involve a large number of confidential matters, such as business strategies, financial information, personnel information, and customer information, that could affect the company's profits and competitiveness if known to third parties. The company's social networking operation rules should define specific confidential matters and state that they must never be disclosed. It is also important to educate and train employees to understand and comply with what information is confidential.

While social networking sites make it easy to share images, videos, texts, and other content, these can cause legal problems if they infringe on the copyrights of others.
In particular, if a company uses another person's copyrighted material on its official account without permission, it will not only be subject to claims for damages, but will also lead to a significant deterioration of the company's image. Therefore, SNS operation rules must ensure that copyright laws are observed and that the intellectual property rights of other companies and individuals are respected.

Prohibition of slander and libel

While social networking sites are powerful tools for enhancing corporate value and promoting brand image, the impact of inappropriate language and behavior, if spread, can instantly damage a company's credibility and reputation. Slander, in particular, can damage not only the value of a company, but also the credibility of the target person or organization. Inappropriate remarks and false information not only greatly damage a company's social reputation, but can also lead to legal problems. Therefore, it is an absolute requirement that the prohibition of slander and defamation be clearly stated and adhered to in a company's SNS operation rules.

Prohibit the dissemination of information of unknown authenticity

SNS has the characteristic that its information can spread instantly to a large number of users. Therefore, sending out incorrect information or information that has not been sufficiently verified can not only create confusion and distrust, but can also significantly damage a company's credibility and brand image. To prevent this from happening, SNS operators are required to confirm that the information is accurate before sending it out.


For example,  Instagram (Instagram) has announced new features to protect users from slander. The "suppression" function, which prevents unwanted comments and direct messages (DMs), and the "hidden words" function, which allows users to classify direct messages containing slander, will be introduced worldwide by the end of August.


Other example isTwitter's "SafeSearch" will exclude all tweets that "may contain content that requires careful handling" or tweets from blocked or suspended accounts. That information can be left visible to users if they so desire, the company said. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey called the new tool "a whole new approach to defamation on Twitter.
